Community land auctions are a radical, liberal proposal for a fairer way to share the benefits of new housing. They were originally endorsed by Ed Davey back in 2007 the idea has a strong Liberal pedigree.

Community land auctions address one of the core problems facing development in Britain: how to ensure that the local community receives a fair share of planning gain, becoming the beneficiary of development rather than its victim. By making sure that the value added by planning permission is captured by local authorities and not landowners and promoters, CLAs allow communities to ensure that wealth created by development is spent on their highest priorities, giving them a strong reason to support development that genuinely benefits them.CLAs would give communities a reason to say yes to new development, whilst making sure that councils hit by years of underfunding have a source of extra income to deliver on local priorities!
