At Lib Dem conference (23rd to 26th September) the party will be considering a policy paper and motion on housing that risks removing our commitment to building more homes and ending the housing crisis. There are two amendments you can support to help us prevent this.

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

Federal Consitution Preamble

Our party constitution opens committing our party to ensuring that “no-one shall be enslaved by poverty…”. If we truly believe this then solving the housing crisis by building more high-quality homes has to be priority number one.

Pro-housing policy ideas

Lib Dems for housing have been working on an amendment that would commit us to localist, liberal policies that will deliver more homes. Up and down the country, exemplar lib dem councils have been delivering thousands of homes and ensuring local support. The party should be celebrating these wins and building on them.

Our policies include estate regeneration to fix the dire state of our country’s social housing and community land auctions as well as other policies we believe can actually deliver extra homes where they are most needed.

Please share with every pro-housing lib dem you know!

Save the housing target

The other amendment we’re backing is to keep overall housing targets in party policy. Targets are a symbol that we’re committed to ending the housing crisis. We’re backing Liberal Reform and the Young Liberals on their amendment to keep the party behind 300,000 homes a year!
